Hawaii was quite the experience on this trip! Tony Silvagni traveled over to Oahu, Hawaii with his mom, Barb Silvagni and girlfriend Leigh Powell to surf in a competition at Turtle Bay. The competition was obviously one reason for the trip, but seeing friends and riding waves all over the island was the main focus. Tony ended up placing equal 5th at the Turtle Bay Longboard Pro, missing a spot in the finals just barely in the last few seconds of the semis. There was never a dull moment on this trip as Leigh, Tony and his friend from Brazil, Gabriel Nascimento scored waves all around the island. Surfing Queens on a good south swell on the south shore was a big highlight of his trip. He surfed queens on his CMP model shaped by Bill Stewart on a solid head high day with long lefts reeling for 75-100 yards. The south shore had plenty of fun breaks such as Ala Moana Bowls, Diamond Head, Publics, and Queens. For the first part of the trip, Tony, Leigh, and Barb all stayed with his friends Ryan, Tracy and their daughter Melia in Kailua and then spent the rest of their time at a condo at Turtle Bay. Everyone went on a hike to Manoa Falls with Mason and May along with her two children. Crouching Lion was another more treacherous trail that they tackled on this trip. Tony, Gabriel and Leigh had some fun waves on the North Shore at Lanikea, Chuns reef, Pupukea, Eukai, and even on the west side at Makaha. Barb was able to capture photos of the entire trip at all the surf breaks. It was an honor for Tony and Gabriel to surf with some legends at Sunset on a solid 6-8ft Hawaiian day with Michael Ho, Al Chapman, and Barton Lynch. One of the big highlights from the trip was Tony got to borrow a 9’10 ½ gun from Brittany Gomulka to surf out at Waimea with Gabriel. There were some sets in the 16-18 foot faces range and both Tony and Gabriel charged some decent sized sets! Tony and Leigh will be traveling over to Japan in a couple of days for an upcoming contest at Onjuku, Japan and then to Taiwan for the World Longboard Championships! Stay tuned and follow all the action.
